Hot air balloon ride with my newly modified Sony NEX-7 camera with full spectrum conversion.

Sony were nice enough to convert my older NEX-7 as a full-spectrum camera. This involved removing the infrared and low-pass filters from the sensor to allow light beyond the visual spectrum to be recorded in the image. You can limit this light by using filters on the lens. For these images, I used a 720nm Infrared filter so you’re only seeing infrared light. I converted the images to black and white and the results were really surprising!

Back when I shot black and white film, I did so because I loved the results you could get by manipulating the exposure and chemical development to get different results. As digital photography became more mainstream, I never got the same enjoyment from digital post production. Digital Cameras are optimized for color output and its just not the same. Using a full spectrum conversion though is the closest we’ve come to the old film days because you can actually control your end-result in the camera.
