Release date for the 50mm 1.8 S is October 26, 2018. You can pre-order your copy here.
This is a pretty unconventional design that Nikon are introducing. There are 12 elements in 9 groups. There are 2 things catch my eye here. First is the plano concave front element. The second thing worth noting is how close to the sensor the rear elements are.
The blue elements are aspherical and the yellow elements are ED glass elements. The aspherical corrects spherical aberrations and astigmatism. The ED glass reduces color fringing and chromatic aberration.
The MTF chart is extremely impressive as well.
Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S MTF Chart
Nikon MTF’s are most likely theoretical – in other words, they’re not taken from the actual product. But still the MTF is likely close to what your actual model will look like (depending on production variances). This lens looks extremely impressive at 30 lines/mm and probably has good decent looking bokeh as well. Remember this lens is designed to pair with the 45 megapixel Nikon Z7 so resolving power was clearly a priority.
Of course MTF charts don’t tell you everything, but its all we have to go off of right now. For under $600 this looks like an outstanding lens.
I’ll be updating this page as we get more information. I will post sample images once I can get a copy to use.
